How to train your dog

When you bring home a dog for the first time, you and your family members get very excited.  A dog is a man’s best friend, but it is not very easy to train him, especially if you don’t have any prior experience in this matter.  There are lots of online tutorials that give you many tips for training your dog successfully. You could also hire professional dog trainers for the first few weeks of training. You can take control once your dog has learned the basic commands and knows how to be disciplined.

If you plan to have hands-on experience in training your dog, here is a checklist that contains all the fundamental concepts that you have to cover:

1. Train the house rules first

What is your dog allowed you to do inside your home? Does he have access to the bed, sofas and other places? Where shouldn’t he go? Where should he eliminate? Potty training should be one of the first areas that you have to focus on to avoid any kind of mess later on. When you train your dog on basic house discipline, you can enjoy a good bonding with your pet.

2. Give him privacy

Irrespective of whether you get a dog or a puppy, you should give your room a private room so that he can feel relaxed at home. When your dog is in a calm frame of mind, he will obey your commands quickly. This private room could be a small place where you also place your dog’s crate; therefore, potty training becomes easy for you.

3. Start with simple commands

When you start training your dog, it is highly recommended that you start with simple instructions like sit, stand, jump, come, go, etc. Teach him to respond to his name, regardless of how busy he is. When he listens to you and responds positively, reward him with a treat, or appreciate him with a pat on the back. Treats and toys are also good ways to reward your dog for good behavior. When he fails to listen to you, never rebuke him. Never raise your voice or hit your dog. This will intimidate him very much.

According to pet experts, here are four simple but mandatory commands that you have to teach your dog as soon as you bring him home:

  • Sit – Considered to be one of the easiest commands to teach your dog; this should be repeated many times a week until your dog has completely understood the command. You can use a treat to tempt your dog to move up and down as required so that he knows when to sit.
  • Down – This is considered to be a difficult pose for dogs, but when you train him properly using the right techniques, you will be surprised to see how well your dog adopts this. Take a treat and hold it next to your dog. When he comes near you smelling the treat, lower it as much as possible by sliding the treat on the ground. This will make him lower his body and that’s when you need to say “Down” and give him a treat for listening to you.
  • Come – This is a very useful command that helps your dog remain safe. Hold your dog by the leash and say “come” so that he comes near you. Once he listens to your instructions, don’t forget to reward him with a treat.
  • Stay – This command instills self-control in your dog. Once your dog has mastered the art of sitting as per your commands, you can train him to stay in that position for a few seconds.

4. Ignore bad behavior

When your dog fails to listen to you, never rebuke him. Never raise your voice or hit your dog. This will intimidate him very much. If he exhibits bad behavior like jumping on people when greeting them, entering areas where he isn’t allowed and the like, all you need to do is to ignore him. When you continue to ignore his actions, your dog will understand his mistake and correct himself.

5. Prevent him from biting

Some breeds of dogs bite a lot than other breeds. The best way to get rid of your dog’s biting habit is to get him chewable toys or bones. Ensure that you only buy toys made from eco-friendly and safe material, so that your dog doesn’t choke on the same. Also, when you feel your dog’s teeth on your mouth on your hands, you could show him that you are in a lot of pain. This will make him understand that he isn’t supposed to be biting.
